3DS specs, release date and price revealed

The 3DS, Nintendo’s upcoming glasses-free 3-D portable gaming console, has been given an official release date and price in Japan: Feb. 26, 2011 for 25,000 yen.

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, announced this information at a press conference on Wednesday. The speculative release date for the 3DS in the U.S. is March 2011. There is no official U.S. price yet, however the Japanese price is equivalent to about $300.

Iwata also announced that the 3DS will have a digital download store for buying new games and old Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles updated to include 3D graphics.

A few of the hardware specifications were also shared:

  • Size when closed: 5.3 inches wide, 2.9 inches long and 0.8 inches tall
  • Weight: 8 ounces
  • Top screen: 3.53 inches and 800×240 resolution
  • Bottom screen: 3.02 inches and 320×240 resolution
  • Three different 0.3 megapixel cameras on the system – two on the outside for taking 3-D pictures and one on the inside
  • Input devices: Touch screen (bottom screen), d-pad, four face buttons, analog joystick, internal microphone, motion sensor and gyro sensor
  • Comes with a charging stand, AC adapter, retractable stylus and a 2 gigabyte SD memory card
