Player Spotlight: Josh Hsu

This is the second in a series of articles aimed at spotlighting Gainesville gaming talent. In this second installment, University of Florida senior and “Super Smash Bros. Melee” player Josh Hsu steps up to the plate. Watch the video above to see him in action, or continue reading to find out more about this “Smasher.”

Name: Josh Hsu
Handle: Hariettheguy
Game: Super Smash Bros. Melee
City: Gainesville, FL
School: The University of Florida
Year: Senior
Major: Pre-Health/Physical Therapy
Strategies: Taunting and Sandbagging
Resources: SMASHBOARDS, Wak017 videos
Characters: Captain Falcon, Fox and Roy

Hsu, who’s ranked fourth among Florida’s Super Smash players, has been playing the game since the original title was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. He began playing Melee competitively in 2006 when he entered the Tampa gaming scene.

Hsu said he loves playing the game because it brings him back to his roots and evokes all the fond memories of playing with his brother as a child. He also enjoys the level of creativity that he can bring to the game in order to give a good show to anyone watching his matches.

“I feel like when I play for a crowd I’m performing for an audience like an artist,” Hsu said.

Even though Hsu loves to put on a show, he also loves sandbagging, or holding back his true potential until the end of a match. He said this is a good way to insult the player and introduce a psychological element to the gameplay.

Hsu hasn’t placed in any of the national tournaments, but he has won numerous Florida and local tournaments. He even took first place on Nov. 19 at the latest GatorLAN, a gaming tournament put on by UF’s largest gaming club. Hsu’s said he thinks his biggest personal achievement has been his ability to analyze his play style and continually improve upon it rather than hit a plateau.

Since Hsu hasn’t placed in the nationals yet, doing so is high on his to-do-list for “Super Smash Bros. Melee.” Other than that, Hsu wants to continue gaining recognition within the gaming community and reach the coveted number one ranking in America.
