Mass Effect 3 lives, and EA Store unintentionally confirms it

That “Mass Effect 3” is currently in development should come as no surprise to anyone.  The latest installment in the Mass Effect series is arguably one of the most anticipated video game releases of 2011, and today’s gaffe by the EA Store only adds fuel to the fire.

According to video game blog Destructoid, the EA Store was updated with — and then removed — the listing for “Mass Effect 3” complete with a short description of the game:

Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

Sounds like it could be another series of trust-gaining side missions followed by one epic final battle, but that’s a lot of speculation from one small paragraph. One other important fact to note is that the Earth has never before been a playable planet in a Mass Effect series game.  That players could actually have the opportunity to fight for the Earth on the Earth is an interesting, if not exciting, turn of events.

With the Video Game Awards airing tomorrow night on Spike TV, one can only assume that BioWare will be revealing the details of “Mass Effect 3,” but teaser videos released last month suggested that the developer would be announcing something entirely new — perhaps a spin-off game within the Mass Effect universe.

We’re just hours away from finding out whether BioWare will satiate its rabid Mass Effect fan base with details of the third and supposedly final title in the series or whether the developer has a secret game up its sleeve.  Hey, who says they can’t do both?
