PlayStation Phone is Xperia Play, requires repurchasing PSN content

This week, Sony finally unveiled its PlayStation phone, called Xperia Play.  According to a Sony Ericsson press release, “XperiaTM PLAY combines a PlayStation-quality gaming experience with the very latest Android smartphone technology.”  While the list of features is extensive, Xperia Play does have one disappointing feature.

While the phone obviously has PlayStation Network connectivity, users who already have PSN content might be frustrated to learn that the content cannot be transferred to the Xperia Play.  “[Xperia Play owners] will have to repurchase the games, so it’s not totally integrated,” Nathan Vautier, Sony’s UK managing director, told Gamespot UK.

On a positive note, Xperia Play is an exceptionally capable gaming phone.  Its features include a 5.1 megapixel camera, a 4-inch multitouch screen and, of course, the latest in Android software.

Several gaming companies will have content ready for Xperia Play on launch day, including Electronic Arts, Gameloft and PopCap.  Trendy Entertainment, a developer local to the playWISE staff, will also have its “Dungeon Defenders” title available for Xperia Play.

The Xperia Play clearly has a lot going for it, but we wonder: is having to repurchase your favorite PSN content a deal-breaker for you?
