Sophomore claims victory at UF StarCraft II LAN

StarCraft II LAN
As shafts of light from the setting sun began to creep into room 110 of Rinker Hall on Nov. 6, 35 students were clashing for dominance on the alien battlefields of StarCraft II.

The event was Gator Gaming’s first member-organized LAN, which president Kyle Kirwin saw as more than a singular event but rather a new direction for the club.

“We expected it to be pretty high quality, and it has been,” Kirwan said. “We’ll definitely plan more things like this in the future — it’s kind of what we want the club to evolve into.”

Lakeside dorm holds Just Dance tournament

The rugs of Lakeside Residential Complex at the University of Florida were officially cut on Wednesday evening during a heated videogame dance-off.

Ubisoft campus representative, Jay Uy, set up the “Just Dance” tournament in order to promote a larger upcoming “Just Dance 2” tournament, which will coincide with the new game’s release. Uy said the dorm event, which drew about 40 people, was quite a success considering this was his first time setting up a dorm event.

“I think a lot of people loved the game. They’re still playing even though it’s pretty much over,” Uy said, motioning to a group of three people dancing while “Jerk it Out” by Caesars blared from the television speakers.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and other Ubisoft tournaments at UF

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood“, “Shaun White Skateboarding” and “Just Dance 2” will all be playable at tournaments hosted by international videogame publisher Ubisoft on the University of Florida campus throughout the Fall 2010 semester.

EA hosting football videogame tournaments at UF

Electronic Arts, one of the largest international videogame publishers, will be holding “Madden NFL 11” or “NCAA Football 11” tournaments at every home Gator football game for the rest of the 2010-2011 season. The first of the season was a “Madden” tournament, which was held Sept. 11 before the University of Florida took down the University of South Florida in “The Swamp.”

Philip Asher, a senior at UF and one of EA’s campus representatives, said there were around 40 people at the booth on Saturday to play videogames, 12 of whom competed in the tournament.

Game store to hold 3-day Smash Bros. tournament

Independent Gainesville videogame retailer,  R.U. Game?, will be holding a weekend-long tournament for “Super Smash Bros.” from Oct. 22 through Oct. 24 with cash prizes for first, second and third place.

There is an entry fee of $10, and the top three players will receive a percentage of that money. First place will get 50 percent of the total pot, second place will get 35 percent and third place will get 15 percent. Of course, the more people that sign up the higher the cash payouts will be.
